Deadline Extension
Posted on: May 17, 2013
My birthday is less than a month away…and I am still not fully recovered. So I will be giving myself a healthy deadline extension for the birthday list. End of the summer? I think I have about 20 things left to do.
The big lesson I’ve learned in the past five weeks or so is: DO NOT take your health for granted. Be insanely grateful for your good health with every step you take. Because in a blink, it can be gone…either temporarily or permanently.
Knotting
Posted on: March 30, 2013
I took a pearl knotting class earlier in the week. It’s a labor-intensive process, but it’s worth it if you are making jewelry with expensive or sentimental beads. Knotting between each bead keeps them from rubbing against each other, and if the bracelet or necklace breaks, you won’t lose the beads. This is my lovely bracelet:
And speaking of knotting, my head has been in knots for about 4 days now. I was at the gym when it happened. I was lifting a small weight and sitting on a bench when my head started to THROB. And it THROBBED for about 7 hours straight. I went to the ER a day and a half later because I still had a headache. They ruled out bad stuff by giving me a lumbar puncture (ugh) and a ct-scan. They didn’t really have an answer for me, though. And…I still have a headache, albeit a much gentler one. I don’t know if it’s the original headache or the “post lumbar puncture” headache they said I might get. Send healthy thoughts my way, please. Much obliged!!

I am almost halfway done with my birthday list. I seem to be dragging my feet this year. I did two things over the weekend: ate at Sandrine’s Bistro and watched A Clockwork Orange.
Sandrine’s Bistro was delightful. My friend and I chose the Restaurant Week menu so had three courses. I had the apple and gorgonzola salad, filet mignon with pomme frites, and orange creme brulee. The food was great and the atmosphere was laidback and cozy.
A Clockwork Orange = the opposite of delightful. But engaging…in the same way a train wreck or other horrible disaster is engaging. Completely twisted and perverse, these droogs were in the gullivers. I think I’ll read the book as well, as it happens to be on the Modern Library’s Top 100 Novels list.
I’ve figured out what my #38 on the birthday list will be: Visit Austin, Texas. I am looking forward to some music, barbeque, and quirkiness! Recommendations for Austin are welcome!

Wow, I’ve been gone awhile. I’ve been busy doing who knows what. I also went to Freeport, Maine, for a weekend and subsequently got a cold and hacking cough. The food alone was worth it, though.
The shopping was good too. There’s a British goods store in Freeport. Mary watched in awe as I gasped and squealed at every other item I laid eyes on. I bought a can of Shandy Bass. I had never heard of it…apparently it’s a soft drink with a wee bit of Bass ale. I haven’t tried it yet but will let you know when I do.
I seem to have forgotten that I have something called A BIRTHDAY LIST…I will have to make up for lost time. I may attempt to squeeze in four items this weekend. Stay tuned.

I never thought I would see the day that I would eat fish eggs. But strange things happen when you have a birthday list to complete.
Over the weekend, a local seafood restaurant was offering a special Icelandic menu during an annual Iceland festival. My friend asked me to go, and when I saw that the first course had fish eggs in it, I was sold.
To be precise, I ate arctic char roe. I can’t say they tasted like much. They were gelatinous little bubbles. I did bite into one that burst and that was a little shocking.
The first course was OK…a lot of raw salmon, which I am not used to. A bunch of onion and other crunchy veggies were smothered in a dill sauce and wrapped in the salmon.
The second course was very good: Icelandic cod and mussels in some type of awesome sauce. Dessert was Icelandic tiramisu, which tasted kind of like gingerbread cake. It was a fun and adventurous meal.
As I reflected on the fish eggs later, a tune floated into my head. I thought to myself, is there a song about fish eggs? Oh no, it’s fish heads.
Wait, what?
Yes: “Fish heads, fish heads, roly poly fish heads. Fish heads, fish heads. Eat them up, yum.” I loved that song when I was a kid. I think there was a corresponding hand gesture involved as well, but I can’t be sure.
I had to learn more. Where did this song come from? Was it from an ’80s cartoon? The Muppet Show? How could it be…it’s such a strange song. And all I could recall was the chorus.
Well, I just searched for the song on Google and up came a link to the music video. I have never seen this video, as I know I would have remembered it. It’s in turn fascinating, cringe-inducing, and just plain bizarre. Which means I love it.
Does anyone else remember this song from 1979?? There’s no music until about 2:10 in…
